Meet Michael – The Man Behind Mika Projects Ltd
Mika Projects Ltd is a proudly local, down-to-earth building company run by Michael McKinlay – a qualified builder with a knack for getting things done, and doing them right.
Michael’s been building for over 30 years and still loves getting on the tools. Starting as an apprentice, he became a qualified builder within four years and also earned his Advanced Trade Certificate. Throughout his career, Michael has always been the guy who steps up – moving into leadership roles thanks to his work ethic, attention to detail, and ability to bring out the best in his team.
He’s worked across a wide range of construction sectors – from modular residential and dense housing to both heavy and light commercial – gaining a deep understanding of different build styles, methods, and innovations.
One of the highlights of Michael’s career was his time working in Fiji, where he started as a Site Manager and was quickly promoted to second-in-command of a $180 million six-star resort. There, he was responsible for managing 1,380 local staff and 19 expat supervisors. It was a game-changing experience that sharpened his leadership skills and taught him the importance of understanding different cultures, work styles, and people.
Michael brings a practical, hands-on approach to every job, with a down-to-earth attitude and a good sense of humour. Whether it’s a tricky renovation, a custom new build, or a small project that just needs doing – he’ll get it sorted.

Meet Kathryn – The backbone behind the business
While not always front and centre, Kathryn plays a vital role in keeping Mika Projects Ltd running smoothly behind the scenes. As co-director, she oversees everything from finance and quoting to sales and client communications. She also brings a strong background in both planting and structural landscaping, helping shape thoughtful outdoor spaces when needed across our projects.
Her knowledge, support, and attention to detail help ensure each job runs smoothly – from first contact to final touches.
